Creating Your Character
Character slots, writing a believable character, appearance and what you start with.
Character slots
After loading in you reach the character select screen. Every player has 3 character slots. Each character is a completely separate person with their own money, items, vehicles, jobs and relationships.
Your characters do not know each other. Information, money and items must never pass between your own characters. See Character separation.
Filling in the details
When you create a character you choose a first and last name, date of birth, gender and nationality.
Tips for a good character:
- Use a realistic name. No celebrities, memes, streamers or famous criminals.
- Pick an age that fits the story you want to tell.
- Give them a reason to be in Los Santos. Did they move here for work? Just get out of prison? Inherit a run-down garage?
- Give them flaws. Characters who are nervous, broke, stubborn or in over their head are far more fun to play with than perfect ones.
- Start small. Everyone arrives as a regular resident. Reputation, money and connections are earned in the city.
Appearance
Next you design your character's look: heritage, face, hair, makeup, tattoos and clothes. Take your time. You can buy new clothes at clothing stores later, but face and heritage are much harder to change.
What you start with
| Cash | $5,000 |
| Bank | $5,000 |
| Items | An ID card |
Your ID card is a real item in your inventory. Police may ask to see it, and you can show it to other players.
Switching characters
To switch characters, use /logout. You return to the character select screen. Finish your scene and park your car first.
