Licences, renting, buying, keys, fuel, garages, repairs and the rules of the road.
Before you drive
Buy a Driver License at City Services ($50). Driving without one can get you a ticket or worse if you're stopped by police. See Licences.
Getting a vehicle
Rental locations are marked on the map. Renting is cheap and the easiest way to get around while you save up.
Visit a dealership to browse the showroom, take a test drive and buy. Once bought, the vehicle is yours and is stored in your garage.
Some vehicles can be earned through the Rewards level track or bought with coins.
Keys and locks
You need the keys to drive a vehicle. You get them automatically when you buy, rent or take out a vehicle.

To let a friend drive your car, use /givekeys <id>. Without an ID it gives keys to the closest person, or to everyone in the vehicle if you're inside it.
Searching for keys and hotwiring a car that isn't yours is a crime. Do it in character, and expect consequences.
Seatbelt
Press B to buckle up. Crash at speed without a seatbelt and you go through the windscreen.
Fuel
Vehicles use fuel. Drive up to a pump at a gas station, get out and press E to refuel. Watch the fuel gauge on your HUD. Running dry in the middle of nowhere is a long walk.
Garages
Take your vehicles out of and put them away at garages marked on the map. Use the third eye at the garage to open it.
- Store your car when you're done with it. Vehicles left out may end up in the impound, and getting them back costs money.
- New vehicles go to the Legion Square garage unless you're told otherwise.
Damage and repairs
Vehicles take realistic damage. A wrecked engine runs badly or not at all. Take your car to a mechanic (Los Santos Customs or Benny's) for repairs, upgrades and cosmetic work. Real players run these shops, so roleplay the visit.
Rules of the road
- Drive like a real person would. Use roads, respect traffic and don't drive off-road in a sports car.
- Speed cameras are around the city. Watch your speed.
- Don't use your vehicle as a weapon. Ramming people without roleplay is VDM. See Roleplay Basics.
