Voice & Communication
Proximity voice, voice ranges, radio, phone calls, and the chat commands for actions and emergencies.
Proximity voice
The Baye uses proximity voice. Other players hear you based on how close they are, just like real life. Walls, cars and distance all matter.
Press ~ (the key under Esc) to cycle your voice range:
| Range | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Whisper | Private conversations right next to someone |
| Normal | Everyday talking. This is the default. |
| Shout | Getting attention across a street or over noise |
Talking at normal range in a quiet room means everyone in that room can hear you. If your character wouldn't say it out loud, whisper or don't say it.
Phone calls
Call other players from your phone (F1). You hear each other wherever you are in the city, and people standing next to you can hear your side of the conversation.
Radio
With a radio item you can join a frequency and talk to everyone on it, wherever they are.
- Open the radio with
/radio, or use the radio item from your inventory. - Enter a frequency to join it.
- Hold Z to talk.
Some frequencies are reserved for emergency services. Everything else is open, so anyone could be listening.
Chat commands
Chat (T) is for commands, not conversation.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/me <action> | Describes something your character does that can't be shown, e.g. /me checks the pulse |
/911 <message> | Calls the police |
/911e <message> | Calls EMS |
/311 <message> | Non-emergency call to the police |
/id | Shows your server ID |
/job | Shows your current job and grade |
/jobs | Opens the job switcher |
/keybinds | Lists every key and command |
/rewards | Opens the Rewards menu |
/me should describe what you do, not what you think or feel. "/me looks nervous and keeps checking the door" is great. "/me is secretly the cartel boss" is not.
In-character vs out-of-character
Everything you say in-game is in character (IC): it's your character speaking. Out-of-character (OOC) talk, like "sorry my mic cut out", should be kept to the absolute minimum in-game. Take OOC questions and disputes to Discord. See Roleplay Basics.
